Jorge Colmenares

Managing Director and Head of Tax Credit Monetization BBVA

Jorge Colmenares is a self-motivated thought trailblazer, pursuing new paradigms in the field of structuring and project financing in clean energy.  He has over 25 years of energy and banking experience, including project finance and the structuring and arrangement of tax credit monetization.  He currently leads the tax credit team at BBVA.  Before joining BBVA, Jorge bolstered Citibank to a dominant position in the tax credit market, spurred by the 2022 IRA’s transferability provisions. The previous three years, he worked in renewables underwriting at GE EFS in the tax equity team.  There, he led the execution of structured and tax equity financing for large wind and solar power projects in the US, Canada, and Mexico.  Prior to GE, he established and managed a boutique investment firm specialized in the structuring and development of small to mid-sized renewable energy projects, in strategic partnership with wind and solar developers. Jorge was the driving force behind the structuring, development, and finance of renewables in rural Minnesota, which brought online one of the first community wind success stories in the region.  Prior to his entrepreneurial endeavors, Jorge was the EVP of finance and major transactions at EDF Renewables, a large renewables developer and US subsidiary of EDF, France’s state-owned utility company.  He joined EDF after six successful years in the structured finance group at JP Morgan, with emphasis in the energy sector.  Before JP Morgan, Jorge worked for three years at Mobil Corporation, leading its UK financing operations.  Jorge has an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management and a Master’s of Science from MIT School of Mechanical Engineering.  He earned his undergraduate degree, Ingeniero Mecánico (summa cum laude), from Universidad Simon Bolivar in Caracas, Venezuela.
