Brian Warshay is a Principal in DNV’s Energy Storage Engineering section and the Team Lead for Energy Storage Independent Engineering. He has over ten years’ experience researching and evaluating large and small-scale energy storage projects that incorporate contracted and merchant revenues across a range of technologies. Brian’s team has led or supported the due diligence of over 1.5 GWh of standalone and hybrid energy storage projects in North America totaling over $1bn in equity and debt financing transactions. As part of his role, Brian is developing the estimation methodology to quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from energy storage operations utilizing marginal emission rate data from DNV partner WattTime.org (see blog post here). He supports project work that incorporates project and product financial and contractual analysis and retail rate policy assessment. He also works with clients developing strategies to incorporate energy storage into their portfolios and those entering new markets with storage products.

Panel Discussion
  • How is cost of finance changing as other costs (CAPEX, Interest Rates, Equipment) increase?
  • Are hedges still the solution or are financing parties looking for something different like PPAs?
  • Is the current market policy squeezing out the ability to develop small scale projects?
  • When is it worth taking the merchant risk vs a PPA contract?
  • Do alternatives to PPA require storage and what do the cash flows look like?
  • What is the cost opportunity for co-location vs a stand alone storage asset?
